Eyelid Surgery in Virginia
If you are concerned about signs of aging around your eyes, you are not alone. The eye is the second most common area of concern for patients in the Washington DC area. The great news is that eyelid surgery can restore your rested and alert appearance and convey a youthful sense of energy.
HOW EYES AGE. HOW EYELID SURGERY HELPS.
Over time, the skin of the upper and lower eyelids stretches. This creates an impression of fatigue. In addition, the fatty tissue that surrounds and supports the eye begins to bulge over time, creating a puffy, tired or angry appearance. Surgical repair of these conditions is called Blepharoplasty. While this surgery can also make improvements in the fine wrinkles on the lower lids and “crow’s feet” on the side of the eye, it cannot eradicate them completely. Laser resurfacing can be used to further smooth out these wrinkles. Sometimes, sagging skin hangs down onto the lashes and obstructs vision. Repairing this extreme condition is considered a medical necessity and may be covered by insurance. Before & After
EYELID SURGERY (BLEPHAROPLASTY) – THE PROCEDURE
During blepharoplasty, the excess skin, muscle and any protruding fat are removed. The resulting scar on the upper eyelid usually is hidden in the crease formed when the eyelid opens. The extension of the scar to the side is also hidden. Two approaches are used on the lower lid. One involves making the incision just under the lower lashes leaving an inconspicuous scar. Another approach is called a transconjunctival blepharosplasty. This procedure is limited to the removal of excess fat only. The incisions are made from the inside of the lower lid avoiding any external scar. Laser resurfacing is ideal for smoothing out any remaining fine wrinkles in the lower eyelid and “crow’s feet” area.
After surgery, the eyelids will be bruised and swollen. If both upper and lower lid procedures are preferred at the same time, it may be difficult to see until some of the swelling dissipates in two or three days. Permanent alterations in visual acuity are extremely rare. Some patients may have difficulty closing their eyes completely or may notice changes in their lower lid position, but these problems are usually temporary. Sutures will be removed within three to five days after surgery and you may shower then. You may resume light exercise one week after surgery and include more strenuous exercise two weeks after surgery. Bruising generally disappears within 10 to 14 days after a blepharoplasty.*Cost estimates are all-inclusive ballpark figures.
