What is Oncoplastic Surgery?

At Center for Plastic Surgery, oncoplastic surgery is a breast reconstructive technique used to help women from Washington, DC; Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD; Arlington and Fairfax, VA; and surrounding areas restore the natural shape and symmetry of the breasts following a lumpectomy. This technique uses the remaining tissue of the breasts to restore its appearance and reposition the nipple and areola. During oncoplastic surgery, the opposite breast can also be worked on to create symmetry.

Who is a Candidate?

Candidates for oncoplastic surgery are those who are undergoing a lumpectomy to remove cancerous tissue from the breast, leaving it distorted. Those who need a full mastectomy are not candidates for this technique and would require a different form of reconstruction to rebuild the breast mound.

The Procedure

Oncoplastic surgery is typically done at the same time as a lumpectomy but can be performed later on as well. Oncoplastic surgery uses reduction and lift techniques. An incision is typically made around the areola, down to the breast crease, and under the fold of the breast. Both breasts can be worked on to restore their shape and symmetry, removing breast tissue from the cancerous breast, while adjusting the shape of the opposite breast to match.

Recovery and Results

Following oncoplastics, patients can expect swelling, bruising, and soreness in the reconstructed breasts. The area will be bandages and post-operative instructions will be provided on how to care for the wound. Physical restrictions and time off work will also be necessary to ensure proper healing. Patients can expect about four weeks of recovery, but often start feeling better and return to work much sooner.
