Health Insurance Covers Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction following a mastectomy is always covered by health insurance policies by law. The passing of The U.S. Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act (WHCRA) in 1998 provides important protection to women who choose to have breast reconstruction following a mastectomy. In fact, in some states, insurance companies and health maintenance organizations (HMO) are required by law to cover this procedure.

Coverage usually includes all phases of breast reconstruction, including multiple stages and the nipple/areolar reconstruction. Unfortunately, not all insurance companies will cover opposite-breast surgery, particularly opposite-breast augmentation and mastopexy. More companies tend to cover opposite-breast reduction.

Prior to any medical procedure, it is important that you contact your insurance provider for your specific coverage information. Coverage and pre-approval requirements will vary depending upon your insurance company or HMO and your level of coverage.
