Laser Hair Removal in Washington, D.C.
What is Laser Hair Removal?
This technique uses a series of laser treatments to prevent the individual follicles from continuing to grow hair. When the laser energy comes into contact with the hair shaft, it’s absorbed by the pigment and travels to the follicle where it destroys the follicle’s ability to produce more hair. Because of the unpredictable way in which the growth cycle functions, this can take several treatments before producing reliable results. The Center for Plastic Surgery uses BBL (broadband light) technology, which brings a wider array of wavelengths to increase effectiveness.
Who is a Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?
Because the laser energy is absorbed by pigment in the hair, patients with dark hair and light skin generally find best results with this treatment. White or very light hair can sometimes have difficulty in absorbing the laser energy because of the lack of pigment. Patients seeking laser hair removal should be sure not to pluck or shave for a day or two before the treatment so that the laser has a hair shaft to follow.
IPL™ & BBL™ For Laser Hair Removal
If you are frustrated by the daily chore of shaving or painful waxing, Forever Young BBL by Sciton can address unwanted hair nearly anywhere on the body. Although not technically a “laser,” BBL can work similarly to achieve long-lasting hair removal in just a few treatments.
By adjusting the BBL hand-piece to a higher wavelength, we can destroy hair follicles in the growth phase, thus reducing the growth of unwanted hair with no downtime. We can use BBL nearly anywhere you want smoother, hair-free skin, such as:
- Bikini area
What to Expect During Your Laser Hair Removal Treatment
Because this treatment uses BBL technology, your eyes will need to be protected with specialized eyepieces to ensure no damage is done by the laser and light energy. Your aesthetician will then apply the handpiece to the treatment area (which are most commonly the face, underarms, legs, bikini area, chest, and back). The length of your treatment can depend on factors like how many areas are being treated and how much hair exists, although it can usually take around an hour. The procedure feels similar to being “snapped” with a rubber band. We understand that everyone’s pain tolerance is different, though, and your comfort is our highest priority.
Results & Recovery
Your recovery period is minimal with this procedure because it’s non-invasive. You can return to your regular activities immediately, although there may be some redness or irritation at the treatment area. The hair can begin to thin or fall out after the first treatment but may continue to grow until the follicle is effectively treated by multiple sessions. This can be subjective to your unique anatomy and hair growth patterns, and your aesthetician will help you create a treatment plan during your consultation. Treatments are generally scheduled four to six weeks apart.
