BOTOX® Cosmetic

In Annandale, Chevy Chase, Bethesda, and the surrounding area, people choose BOTOX to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles in the upper face for a more youthful appearance. These treatments are minimally invasive, involve minimal discomfort, and require no incisions or downtime. Botulinum toxin, the main ingredient in BOTOX, is an injectable neuromodulator that works by weakening the muscles of facial expression. Once the resting tone of the treated muscles is weakened, the pull of the muscles relaxes and the overlying skin flattens. At Center for Plastic Surgery, BOTOX treatments require a quick office visit; we can also incorporate BOTOX into other common cosmetic medical spa procedures for our patients from Washington, DC; Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD; Arlington and Fairfax, VA; and beyond.

Am I a Candidate for BOTOX?

As we get older, our skin begins to produce less and less collagen, the key to strong, healthy skin. This can result in the first signs of aging with skin laxity, fine lines, and wrinkles. BOTOX is an effective treatment for those who want to look younger, but don’t want a surgical procedure to do so. BOTOX can help you if you have the following concerns:

  • Frown lines in the forehead
  • Furrows between your eyes
  • “Crow’s feet” in the outer corner of the eyes

BOTOX can be used alone, or combined with other facial rejuvenation procedures like the faceliftbrow lift, or facial fillers. BOTOX treatments are not recommended for those that are pregnant or breastfeeding. Our BOTOX experts can meet with you to determine if this treatment is right for you.

What Else Can BOTOX Do?

Along with helping you look younger, BOTOX Cosmetic is effective in:

  • Suppressing over-active sweat glands to treat hyperhidrosis
  • Suppressing nasal muscles to decrease nasal flaring
  • Giving a narrower, more heart-shaped face when injected into the masseter muscles
  • Lifting the lips to give a more defined appearance

The specific risks and the suitability of BOTOX for a given individual can only be determined at the time of consultation.

BOTOX vs. Dermal Fillers: Which One Is Right for Me?

BOTOX treatment is different from dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® for the aging face, which work by filling in wrinkles or depressions. Fillers are frequently not as effective as BOTOX in removing wrinkles in the upper third of the face. By physiologically weakening the muscles with BOTOX, wrinkles are lessened naturally—often disappearing altogether. BOTOX works on dynamic wrinkles only, or those that are present or worsened with facial expressions. Fillers are typically recommended for static wrinkles, or those that are present even when the face is relaxed.

What to Expect During Your BOTOX Treatment

During treatment with BOTOX, our Aesthetic Nurse Specialist or an experienced physician will map out the injection points around the brows and forehead. Using a tiny needle, the nurse or physician injects BOTOX directly into the muscle of the area to be treated, causing those specific muscles to be paralyzed. This halts muscle function and thereby diminishes the presence of wrinkles. It takes just a few days to realize the beneficial effect of BOTOX injections. Following an appointment, patients can resume their normal activities after 24 hours. This paralysis is temporary, so injections are usually repeated every three to six months.

How Long Does It Take for BOTOX To Work?

BOTOX begins working in just a few days. After that time, patients can enjoy smoothed lines and wrinkles for a younger appearance. Patients only need one treatment session and can enjoy their results for up to three to six months before a touch-up session is needed.

What Are the Side Effects of BOTOX?

After treatment with BOTOX, you might experience some mild side effects like swelling, bruising, and itching at the injection site. This should diminish fairly quickly. In rare instances, BOTOX can cause facial drooping. However, the risk is greatly decreased when you choose an expert BOTOX injector like those at CPS.

Patients can get right back to their regular routine after BOTOX treatment, but there are a few things you’ll want to avoid to ensure successful results. After treatment, patients should avoid blood thinning medication like aspirin or ibuprofen and should stay out of direct sunlight. To manage discomfort or bruising, an ice pack can be applied to the treatment area, but direct skin contact with the ice should be avoided. Patients should avoid bending or lifting for up to four hours after treatment and avoid exercise for at least 24 hours.
