Sclerotherapy & Spider Vein Treatment in Washington, D.C.
Do you avoid showing your legs, regardless of the temperature? If spider veins are making you feel self-conscious about your legs, then sclerotherapy might be right for you.
Clusters of purple, blue, or red veins can appear on thighs or calves at any age. Pregnancy, weight fluctuation, aging, hormonal shifts, and genetics can all lead to this difficult-to-hide condition—and even young women may experience unwelcome discolored veins. Here at Center for Plastic Surgery, we use a safe and effective procedure called sclerotherapy to dramatically reduce the appearance of spider veins.
How Does Sclerotherapy Work?
After a thorough consultation, our registered nurse injector Cathy Oliva will inject a sclerosant solution into the spider vein. The solution irritates the blood vessel, causing the blood to clot and the blood vessel to stick to itself. The collapsed vessel then turns into scar tissue over time and spider veins disappear from view.
The procedure can be done in as little as 30 minutes, depending on how many veins are being treated. Immediately after the solution is injected, pressure is applied to the veins to prevent the blood from returning when you stand up. You’ll need to wear compression stockings for a few days after treatment.
Sclerotherapy is a minimally invasive outpatient procedure that requires little-to-no downtime, and patients can resume normal activity immediately.
Is Sclerotherapy Safe?
While there are risks to every procedure, sclerotherapy is considered very safe. It’s been used since the 1930s and has time-tested, proven results. If after-care guidelines are followed, sclerotherapy is a low-risk treatment that can significantly improve the appearance of your legs.
How Do I Know if Sclerotherapy is Right for Me?
Spider veins are not always purely cosmetic. Many women experience an aching sensation in the legs when spider veins aren’t properly treated.
The only way to learn if you’re a good candidate for sclerotherapy is to seek out a personalized consultation where we will evaluate your current spider veins and discuss treatment options. We will create an individualized plan to your reduce spider veins.
