Breast Augmentation in Northern Virginia
Breast augmentation has been performed safely with very high patient satisfaction for more than 40 years. If you have small breasts or breasts that have become smaller after pregnancy or weight loss, you may be a candidate for breast enlargement through a surgical procedure called Breast Augmentation. Northern Virginia patients may view before and after photos on this site or during a consultation.
COST OF BREAST AUGMENTATION IN THE WASHINGTON DC AREA
The price for breast augmentation varies depending on an individual patient’s goals and needs with surgery. At both Center for Plastic Surgery locations in Chevy Chase and Annandale, silicone gel implants cost a little more than saline, and some patients may have requirements which change the cost slightly.
We do offer financing through United Medical Credit and CareCredit and accept credit cards for surgery.

SALINE OR SILICONE?
Breast augmentation patients again have a choice between silicone and saline breast implants. A new generation of silicone gel implants, approved by the FDA since 2006, are available to women over the age of 22. Mentor and Allergan, the two companies which manufacture silicone implants, have both concluded definitively through long-term clinical trials in cooperation with the FDA that silicone implants are safe and effective. Saline Breast Implants
Saline implants are comprised of a silicone rubber shell that is filled with saline solution during surgery. Since saline implants are filled after insertion, it is possible to place these implants with slightly smaller incisions. Should a saline breast implant ever rupture, it is perfectly safe for the saline to be absorbed into the body.
Silicone Breast Implants
Silicone gel implants are now much more popular than saline. In 2012, 72 percent of the 330,631 breast-augmentation procedures in the U.S. used silicone implants, while 28 percent used saline. Silicone gel implants are known to look and feel more natural than saline.
COMBINING BREAST AUGMENTATION WITH OTHER PROCEDURES
Breast augmentation may be combined with a breast lift to restore breast shape, or be performed as part of a “mommy makeover” with a tummy tuck and/or liposuction.
BREAST IMPLANT SIZE AND PLACEMENT
An implant is placed behind the breast gland or, more commonly, behind the pectoralis muscle under the breast. Our surgeons and staff can discuss placement recommendations and which incision options are right for you. Our approach to breast augmentation is highly personalized. We will help you select the size of the implant by placing trial implants in a bra for you to see the changes in your appearance.
- In rare instances, patients may develop a breast “capsular contracture” which can cause unnatural firmness or alter the shape or position of the breast implant. We are very proactive in the prevention of capsular contracture, and quick to remedy it when it occurs.
- Breast cancer rates are no higher for people who have had breast augmentation surgery than for the general population.
HOW LONG WILL MY IMPLANTS LAST?
At some point in your lifetime, you may need to have your implants replaced. Replacements are not automatically required after a certain time period. In the years following your initial breast augmentation surgery, you should continue to have routine breast exams and mammograms.

PREPARING FOR BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
You can schedule your breast augmentation consultation at either of our Washington DC area offices in Chevy Chase, Maryland or Annandale, Northern Virginia. If you are over the age of 30, we require you to have a mammogram before your surgery.
AFTER BREAST AUGMENTATION SURGERY
A soft compressive dressing will be placed around your chest before you wake from the anesthesia. One or two days later, this dressing will be removed. We will give you a soft, elastic post-operative bra to wear for three weeks, which must be removed for bathing.
