Gynecomastia Surgery

Each year, thousands of men from Washington, DC; Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD; Arlington and Fairfax, VA; and beyond have male breast reduction surgery to treat gynecomastia, or enlarged male breasts. This popular procedure restores a flatter, more masculine contour to the chest. Over 22,000 men in the U.S. had a male breast reduction in 2012, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, making it the 4th most common cosmetic procedure for men.

If you suffer from gynecomastia, the effects can go beyond a desire to change your appearance. You might feel self-conscious about your body or find yourself avoiding social activities such as swimming or playing basketball. In adolescents and adults alike, gynecomastia can contribute to a poor self-image and even prevent sufferers from fully enjoying personal relationships.

What Causes Gynecomastia?

Gynecomastia is estimated to affect up to 60% of men in the United States to some degree. For most of these men, there is no specific cause, although the use of certain drugs, such as anabolic steroids, hormonal changes, or medical conditions can contribute to gynecomastia. Other men may inherit the tendency towards developing male breast. As male breasts are partially composed of fatty tissue, weight gain or obesity can also cause the breasts to appear larger.

How Much Does Male Breast Reduction Cost in the Washington, DC, Metro Area?

The cost for male breast reduction typically ranges from $4,790 to $8,000, depending on the specifics of the procedure. We will provide you with a specific cost estimate when you come in for your consultation.

About Male Breast Reduction Surgery

Male breast reduction surgery provides an excellent,  long-lasting solution to achieve a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest. In an outpatient procedure, your plastic surgeon can remove excess fat and/or glandular tissue in the breasts, sculpting the area to look natural with your individual body contour.

Depending on your needs, the procedure may include liposuction, tissue excision, or a combination of both. The incisions for male breast reduction are usually very small and placed in inconspicuous locations, either in the armpit or around the nipple/areola, so the resulting scars are barely noticeable even when you go bare-chested.

Recovery from male breast reduction surgery is usually quick and relatively pain-free. Most men are back to work within a week or two and experience more soreness than pain. Your surgeon may instruct you to wear a compression garment for the first few weeks to help control post-operative swelling. Depending on the extent of your surgery, you may be able to return to the gym in as little as 4 weeks.

Who is a Candidate for Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Any healthy man who is bothered by having enlarged breasts can be a good candidate for male breast reduction. We advise that patients be at or near their ideal body weight before having the procedure, as changes in weight can affect the appearance of the results.

Male Breast Reduction After Weight Loss

If you have recently lost a lot of weight, you may have excess, sagging skin remaining in the breasts after the weight is gone. Using techniques similar to those for female  breast reduction, our plastic surgeons can remove redundant skin and restore a smoother, firmer contour to your chest.

Does Insurance Cover Male Breast Reduction Surgery?

Male breast reduction is considered a cosmetic procedure, so it is typically not covered by health insurance policies. Our financing specialists at Center for Plastic Surgery will be happy to discuss your options for financing plastic surgery, including male breast reduction.
