Body Lift in Washington D.C.

Those who have never lost a lot of weight may not think about what happens to the extra skin that remains after the weight is gone. But if you’re one of the thousands of men and women in Chevy Chase and Bethesda, MD; Arlington and Fairfax, VA; and the Washington, DC, area who have achieved massive weight loss, either through bariatric surgery or diet and exercise, you know that it’s still there, literally hanging around your midsection, back, arms, or thighs.

This excess skin can keep you from fully enjoying your success, making exercise uncomfortable at a time when you are more committed than ever to staying healthy and keeping you from buying those figure-flattering clothes that you look forward to wearing.

This patient underwent a mid-back lift to address the loose skin in her back. The scar was designed to be hidden by a bra or bikini top.

How Can Body Contouring Help?

If you are still hiding your body even after your weight loss, our board-certified plastic surgeons can help you complete the positive changes that started with a healthier lifestyle and dramatic weight loss. Body contouring after weight loss can include a number of procedures, customized to help you get rid of the excess skin and achieve a more proportional body contour.

Depending on your needs, body contouring after weight loss may include one or more of the following procedures:

  • Tummy tuck or extended tummy tuck to tighten muscles & remove excess skin on the abdomen
  • Arm lift to tighten hanging skin and firm the upper arms
  • Thigh lift to lift and firm sagging skin around the inner and outer thighs
  • Liposuction to remove additional unwanted fat deposits and refine the new body contour
  • Lower body lift to reduce excess skin on the lower belly, hips, buttocks and thighs
  • Circumferential body lift (belt lipectomy) to remove excess skin around the entire trunk

Women might also consider breast lift surgery, with or without implants, to restore shape and volume to sagging breasts after weight loss.

  • About Body Contouring at Center for Plastic Surgery

With an eye for aesthetic contouring of the abdomen, thighs, buttocks and back, our surgeons remove excess skin to tighten and flatten these areas. The end result is a body that is not only dramatically thinner, but also smoother with a pleasing, natural-looking shape. Your clothes will fit you better, and you will be able to enjoy physical activity more freely and comfortably.

A body lift is performed under general anesthesia and we ask patients to plan for an overnight hospital stay. As post weight loss surgery is more involved than many other cosmetic procedures, the recovery process is also more intensive. Typically, patients must refrain from strenuous activities for 4 weeks or more after surgery and return more frequently for post-operative visits to ensure that they are healing properly.

Although body-contouring surgery will create scars, our surgeons take care to place the scars where they are least conspicuous or able to be hidden by clothing. If treated correctly, the scars will fade. Most of our post-bariatric surgery patients in the Washington, DC area find that a little scarring is a small price to pay for tighter skin and a better body shape.
