Excess fat on the neck and around the jawline can dramatically impact the overall appearance of your face. Not only does it make your neck look shorter, it can cause your jaw and chin to appear weak and prematurely age you. Using advanced submental liposuction techniques, our board certified plastic surgeons can reduce fatty tissue beneath the chin, under the jowl, and along the upper neck to help redefine the transition from head to neck and restore a slimmer, more youthful appearance.
What to Expect from Neck Liposuction
During your personalized consultation, our surgeons will listen to your concerns and discuss your options with you. If submental liposuction is the best choice for you and you feel comfortable moving forward with surgery, your procedure will be scheduled.
Your procedure will be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with IV sedation at either our accredited surgical facility in Annandale or at Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, DC. Your surgeon will begin by making small, inconspicuous incisions that are easily hidden, often located in the natural crease below the chin or even behind the earlobe. Through these incisions, your surgeon will use a small, hollow tube called a cannula to suction excess fat from the area, carefully following the natural line of your jaw and neck to ensure natural-looking results*.
Once the desired results* have been achieved and your surgeon has sculpted a more pleasing neck contour, your incisions will be sutured and dressed. You will be able to return home the same day, though it is recommended that you have a designated driver and someone to help you out for the remainder of the day until the effects of anesthesia or IV sedation wear off.

Am I a Good Candidate for Neck Liposuction?
Submental liposuction can be a great option for improving the appearance of an aging neck or addressing excess fatty deposits under the chin. Candidates who benefit most from this procedure meet the following criteria:
- Have good skin laxity and do not have excess or sagging neck skin
- Wish to reduce fat around the jaw, chin, and neck
- Are non-smokers or willing to quit in the weeks before and after surgery
- Have reasonable expectations of the results* that can be achieved
After Your Neck Liposuction Procedure
After your procedure, you will likely experience some discomfort and slight swelling in the area, which should resolve within a few days. You may be required to wear a special wrap to both promote healing and preserve your results*. Most patients return to work within a week, though strenuous activity that raises your blood pressure or involves quick head movement should be avoided for one to two weeks.
