Is Liposuction Permanent? Tips for Maintaining Your Liposuction Results

When choosing a cosmetic procedure, most of us focus on the results we can expect and how long we can enjoy the procedure’s benefits. That’s true for people considering liposuction, too, who wonder whether the removed fat cells can return after the procedure.

So, how long does liposuction last? Is liposuction permanent? You will be happy to know that liposuction results are considered permanent—to a degree. Liposuction suctions away unwanted fat cells, eliminating them for good. However, your remaining fat cells can grow larger if you gain weight, so the longevity of your liposuction results is up to you!

Here are some tips for achieving long-lasting liposuction results.

1. Follow Your Plastic Surgeon’s Recovery Guidelines

After your liposuction treatment session, your plastic surgeon will advise you to wear a compression garment for the first 2 to 4 weeks. The compression garment will help keep swelling to a minimum and contour your body as you heal. You should also get plenty of rest and take 5 to 7 days off work to recover.

Following your plastic surgeon’s instructions will help your body heal faster as well as give you the best liposuction results possible.

2. Move Your Body Post-Procedure

While it can be challenging to be active when recovering from a cosmetic procedure, your plastic surgeon will advise you to gently move your body as soon as possible. In the days and weeks following your liposuction treatment, take slow walks or engage in other light activities. Gentle movement helps your body regain strength, encourages blood circulation, and boosts healing.

3. Avoid Strenuous Activities

Delay strenuous activities for 3 weeks post-procedure to prevent straining your incision and aggravating swelling. Additionally, if your incisions separate before they are adequately healed, they may lead to more visible scarring after you recover. Keep gently moving your body after liposuction, but don’t jump into high-intensity workouts until cleared by your surgeon.

4. Maintain a Healthy Diet

While it’s normal to have weight fluctuations, it’s a good idea to stay within 5 to 10 pounds of your ideal weight. Although liposuction permanently eliminates fat cells, your fat distribution can change if you gain a substantial amount of weight. When new fat cells form, they can impact your newly sculpted contours.

To prevent gaining too much weight after your liposuction procedure, make sure to fill your plate with nutrient-dense greens and vegetables, energy-rich proteins, and healthy carbs—and enjoy treats in moderation.

5. Exercise Regularly

Having a workout routine you enjoy will help keep your body strong and preserve your new contours. You don’t need to suddenly take up heavy weightlifting or high-intensity workouts if you don’t enjoy them. After you’ve recovered, it’s better to find activities you enjoy and can stick to every day, such as running, cycling, or hiking.

You can enjoy your liposuction results for many years if you do your part to maintain your results. Men and women who come to our practice often find that their new post-liposuction shape gives them even more motivation to live more actively, and you can see why in these before and after photos.
